Rift Helium has confirmed a new phase of execution at its Upepo Project in southwest Tanzania, marking another step towards commercial helium exploration in one of Africa’s emerging industrial gas provinces.
The company announced on 28 July that the Environmental Impact Assessment process is now in its final stages, clearing the way for a planned 3D seismic acquisition programme during the third quarter of 2026. The seismic campaign will be followed by data processing, interpretation and an updated independent resource assessment expected during the first quarter of 2027.
Exploration programme enters execution phase
According to the company, the planned work programme is fully funded and includes both the seismic campaign and a two-well exploration drilling programme scheduled to begin during the first half of 2027.
Completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment represents a significant execution milestone because it enables the transition from planning into field operations. The seismic survey is expected to improve geological understanding of the Upepo licence area before drilling commences.
Tanzania strengthens its industrial resource pipeline
The Upepo Project is located within Tanzania’s Rukwa Basin, an area that has attracted increasing attention for its helium potential.
Unlike helium produced as a by-product of natural gas processing, Rift Helium is targeting primary helium resources, a segment that has become strategically important as global demand rises across semiconductor manufacturing, medical imaging, aerospace, scientific research and advanced electronics.
Successful development would expand Tanzania’s participation in the global industrial gases market while supporting diversification of the country’s mining and natural resource sector.
Investment supports long-term production potential
The company’s confirmation that funding is already in place for both seismic acquisition and drilling reduces execution uncertainty and allows operational work to progress according to schedule.
Should exploration prove successful, the project could contribute to future helium exports from East Africa at a time when supply security has become increasingly important for technology manufacturers and healthcare industries worldwide.
